Cute Baby
This is ALIIOAIGA TUVAOFONO SOREN MASANIAI. He is the 12th child in a family we home teach. They live in a 3 bedroom orange house with his 2 uncles and some cousins. The mom and dad have a bedroom, the girls have another (6 of them), and all the boys sleep on the living room floor with blankets and various cushions. The brother gets the other bedroom. They all share 1 1/2 baths. He is a cute baby and actually comes to a home with lots of love. The Samoan custom is for the grandfather to pick out the names. Soren is the name the family will call him.

Another "Interesting" Day
This morning I called the beauty shop across the street from where we lived to get a haircut. It turned out to be a good haircut, but about 3 1/2 times as expensive as i paid at home. But I will probably go there again.
Then I came to the office and worked for awhile. Later on in the afternoon a dirty, 6 ft, 60ish man with long matter gray hair came in. He rattled something off about Jesus Christ and money, so I immediately got Elder Lyman and Elder Mcintire to come help. By that time Elder Lyman had manuevered him out the door, and the Elder Mcintire called security. A guy drove up in a red car because apparently this guy had been going through his car down the street. Then security showed up and they went down the hill somewhere. I think he was finally arrested on the Temple Grounds. In lookiing back that could have been a bad situation. He had some kind of sharp instrument that he was waving around. He talked about putting all the cars into a volcano. Weird or trying to act weird. Anyway, from now on I'm keeping the front door locked.
Then we went to the Masanaia's for dinner. Here are some picts:
We had corned beef, taro root with a green sauce, taro leaves with corned beef and coconut milk, and lamb neck bones. Very interesting.
This is looking across the street from their house. The pictures don't really do it justice. Trash is everywhere.
This is the family inside the house. The missionaries stopped over, and also some friends. The reed mats on the floor are only brought out for special visitors, so we felt like royalty amongst all the poverty. I was sitting by the mother near a window, and looked up and a chicken was looking in the window, which didn't seem to have a screen on it. The mom is due to have her 12th child any day now.

Ben and Libby come to visit!
Ben and Libby came to visit over the weekend and it was wonderful having them here. Friday night we went to the Oakland A's game. It was freezing cold, but we were prepared with lots of layers and blankets.
We warned them that it was cold here, but if was even colder than they thought.
On Saturday we went on the ferry to San Francisco and went to Alcatraz.
It was a great tour and really made you think about being just a number, not a person. Here is my favorite inmate:
I did find some interesting things, that appealed to my artistic side:
Sunday we went to our church and then spent time at the Visitors Center and the temple grounds:
Monday we rode the BART back to San Francisco and took a tour. The Golden Gate is orange, not gold.
We also saw the "Painted Ladies" which are the colorful house in San Francisco.
It was a great visit, and we hated to see them go home, but now it's back to missionary work.

The Apartment
We live in an apartment building that is fairly old, and has some unique features. Here are two of them:
